Finding Footing to Move Forward!

12/30/03

Years ago, Henry Emerson Fosdick wrote about a tension that seems appropriate in the week we launch into a new year: "He who cannot rest, cannot work; he who cannot let go, cannot hold on; he who cannot find footing, cannot go forward."

Taking time over holidays with family, friends and community, rekindles our vitality. It helps center us on the things that matter most. There is time for service, thanksgiving, prayer, laughing, remembering, worship, touch, singing and tears of joy and loss. Out of that rest comes a desire to get back to work--making meaning out of the rest of our existence.

Letting go of 2003 somehow sets the stage for holding on to that which was important as building blocks for our future. What are you glad is behind you? Which of this year's experiences will help you and your team take advantage of opportunities for years to come?

As you think of finding your footing in this final week of the year, what holds you firmly grounded? Your own personal journey has a way of surfacing values, faith, and principles that can help guide you in the choices you make in 2004. Some people make New Year's Resolutions; I prefer to take a new look at my personal and professional goals. I adjust as necessary and recommit to those goals and the guiding values that will help me reach them. With your own unique history in mind, what does moving forward mean to you and your team? What solid ground do you leap from?

A PAULSON QUOTE OF THE WEEK
