Go to the Store!

12/23/02

Sam Walton once reminded his leaders, "Whenever you get confused, go to the store."

Even in the midst of the holidays, these remain confusing times for so many of us. What paths do we take? What are the strategic moves that we should make to seize the opportunities that are there for ourselves and our organizations? When I come back from attending a workshop or convention at the National Speakers Association, I don't want to just study my notes; I want to get back on the platform. I want to connect with the audiences that truly sustain my reason for speaking. I am able to put ideas to work, try new wrinkles, but it still comes back to meeting the needs of my customers. Where is your store to go back to when you are confused? Who do you watch? Who do you listen to? As we end the year with more time and less frantic striving, take time to get back to your store. May the lessons learned sustain you and sharpen your focus as you move into 2003.

MONDAY'S MIRTHFUL MOMENT

Christmas time means buying presents for those you love. Mac McKeen (mac.mckeen@guidant.com) provides this weeks mirthful moment...some actual label instructions on consumer goods:

On a Sears hairdryer: "Do not use while sleeping."
(Gee, and that's the only time I have to work on my hair.)

On packaging for a Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body."
(But wouldn't this save even more time?)

On most brands of Christmas lights: "For indoor or outdoor use only."
(As opposed to what?)

On a Japanese food processor: "Not to be used for the other use."
(I gotta admit, I'm curious.)

On a child's Superman costume: "Wearing of this garment does not enable you to fly."
(I don't blame the company. I blame parents for this one.)

When you keep your eyes open for mirth, you just may find it! Hope this kicks off your morning and helps get your mood adjusted for the week. Now, get busy MAKING CHANGE WORK and have some fun along the way!...
