Keep Retooling Instead of Retiring!
11/11/02
Trish Nicholson reports in the November AARP Bulletin: "In an AARP survey of workers age 45 to 74, more than eight out of 10 respondents said they would work even if they were financially set for life. And seven out of 10 plan to work in their 'retirement years.' The numbers reflect a stronger preference for working than a similar survey in 1985. ... What's the dream job for older workers? Respondents said one with adequate time off (86 percent), respect of supervisors (84 percent) and flexibility (76 percent), as well as health insurance (84 percent) and a good pension (76 percent)."
Change agents of the future just may have to change how they look at aging but experienced workers. With the right approach they can be motivated to help organizations make change work. Many are forecasting a huge worker shortage during the next 20 years, but few are looking to a workforce that is ready to take a new look at what it means to retire. Instead of seeing aging workers as people who are soon to leave, many of the best companies are looking at ways to retool and refocus experienced employees who are still eager to make a difference. Don't let them settle for working their way to retirement when they just might be ready to soar into a new career if that career was flexible enough to meet their changing needs. People are living longer. They want a quality life and the opportunity to remain active and productive for years to come. Give me six months working full time on a project and six months to travel and play golf, and you've got me excited. After all, there are just so many golf courses to play...particularly if you have seen how I play!
MONDAY'S MIRTHFUL MOMENT
Sandy S. via Dr. Ann Week's Ezine provides this week's Mirthful Moment--Insights for the YA YA SISTERHOOD. Enjoy!
1) I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That's my idea of a perfect day.
2) My mind not only wanders, it sometimes leaves completely.
3) The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes.
4) Amazing! You hang something in your closet for a while and it shrinks two sizes!
5) They keep telling us to get in touch with our bodies. Mine isn't all that communicative but I heard from it the other day after I said, "Body, how'd you like to go to the six o'clock class in vigorous toning?" Clear as a bell my body said, "Listen fatty....do it and die."
6) If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it will always be yours. If it doesn't come back, it was never yours to begin with. But, if it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your telephone, takes your money, and doesn't appear to realize that you had set it free......You either married it or gave birth to it.
When you keep your eyes open for mirth, you just may find it! Hope this kicks off your morning and helps get your mood adjusted for the week. Now, get busy MAKING CHANGE WORK and have some fun along the way!...
