Training Helps Invent the Future!
09/21/04
Alex Cirillo said it well: "We depreciate other assets. We need to depreciate the value of experience. And when you depreciate any asset you have to be ready to invest in securing new assets to replace the old. You can't cut training in the difficult times and expect to invent the future."
There is obvious value in experience, and it will continue to be of value. Experience helps us learn how to learn. It also helps develop the "earned" optimism that comes from applying experience and creativity to new challenges and producing results. But experience can also trap organizations and teams in outdated thinking and practices. Most organizations are ready to invest in capital improvements to match their visions, but fewer are ready to make the ongoing investment in retooling their people so they are ready to capitalize on the opportunities strategic investments create. The best leaders value both experience and continuing education; they use training as a strategic advantage. Are you a learning organization or a coasting organization? What are the strategic skills your people need to help invent the future? Don't cut training; make every effort to use it as a strategic advantage it can and must be.
