Ask For A Few Favors!
07/08/02
After the July 4th celebration, it's time we get back to business. To help us, let's take an insight from one of the most astute and successful Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin: "Always ask people for favors. People will ask you to return them. That is how one painstakingly constructs free exchange, which is the basis of all public and private business--one polite request at a time."
Benjamin Franklin, our American forefather and patriot, was a scientist and is now a notable geek hero. He discovered "peer-to-peer file sharing" when he, as a precocious boy, asked the governor of Pennsylvania for a book. He credits that moment as the network request that launched his publishing career.
Everyone knows the secret of doing favors to others, but there is a drawback. If I keep saying, "Let me help you!" "Let me help you!" "Let me help you," I am saying a subtle message--"You need a lot of help!" The greatest compliment you can pay another is to ask for a favor in an area where you respect them. Sometime that means asking for information, for contacts, for action, or for valuable input from their area of expertise. Whatever favor you ask, be ready to make use of what they provide. Be sure to give more than your share of credit to those who contribute, and be sure to reciprocate when asked.
Sometimes difficult economic times are times when personal exchange can get the economic pipeline primed and ready for a turnaround. Got any favors you need to ask?
