Strategic Technology Paralysis!
07/07/03
Daniel Burrus, makes keeping up with technological trends his business. He has a caution worth sharing: "The US has never been closer to falling behind as a leader in IT technology. Ever since the dot com bubble burst and the economy turned south, businesses large and small have changed how they think about new technology. They now see implementing new technology as a luxury they can no longer afford. Many feel there are no new 'killer applications' on the horizon, and the focus has shifted to using technology they already have, cutting costs, downsizing and massive layoffs. ... The result is a strategic paralysis that could last well into the next year and beyond."
Strategic technological paralysis is not a place change leaders like to be stuck. Are you on hold or are you selectively investing in technological advances that will give you a leg up on emerging opportunities that serve real customers? There may be no obvious killer apps out there, but you may very well "kill your future" if you are not working to integrate new technology into your delivery and solutions strategies. If you don't have spare money to invest, at least free your people to invest time in keeping up on the advances on the periphery of your industry. Scan for trends that might apply. Keep asking your customers, suppliers and industry experts, "What are you seeing on the horizon that excites you?" Then listen. Scanning and listening will reveal veins of golden technological opportunities that just may help you shape your future and serve your clients with the new solutions they demand. This week, turn a little of your worry time into wisdom time.
