Meant to Enjoy Work!

06/15/04

Gordon Bethune, Chairman and CEO of Continental Airlines, knows the importance of enjoying one's career: "Customer service starts with employee satisfaction. You can't deliver any kind of service if the employees don't like their work. I was an airplane mechanic, and do you know how much faster I could fix a plane if I really wanted to? Our employees are willing to do more because they enjoy working here."

In Ecclesiastes 3:22, the Bible (NIV) makes the same statement: "So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?" There is something about the way we are created that let's us know when we use our gifts in a way that satisfies us and those we serve, work ceases to be work. Such work becomes a mission that provides some sense of meaning. In times of economic uncertainty, people often are willing to stay in jobs that are not satisfying. They settle for a job that pays the bills, and when they do, time drags and work becomes drudgery. Life is too short to stay in a job you don't enjoy. There is no warranty on anyone's toe that guarantees we will last long enough to fulfill our dreams...someday. As has been said, life is not a dress rehearsal. This is the big show. Have you taken your career to where it needs to be? Do you and your team enjoy their work? Do you know how much more effective and faster you could be if you really wanted to fix "your plane" so you could soar? Don't let you or your team settle, or you will have a motivation problem!
