Go To The Store!

06/03/02

Sam Walton had a wise way to center his thinking: "Whenever you get confused, go to the store."

One of the biggest challenges for any change agent is to get out of the clutter and beyond the distractions to make a difference where it counts. In fact, some changes are unnecessary and only add to the clutter and chaos. But how do you find your way in making smart choices? Staying focused on your customer is always the best starting point.

When you need to get in touch with why you do what you do, go to where your customer is served. When you are there, be ready to do less talking and more listening and observing. When you are selling, spend less time selling and more time making sure you are serving. After all, if what you or your people are doing is not serving your clients, it better be serving someone who is or it would be better to not do it at all.

This week, make sure you spend a little time going to where the action is--go to "your" store!

MONDAY'S MIRTHFUL MOMENT

This week's mirth comes from Fred P quoted in Dr. Ann Week's "Weeks of Fun #307." Enjoy this collection of answers by a group of 4 to 8 year olds who were asked, "What does love mean?"

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love." --Rebecca - age 8

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." --Karl - age 5

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." --Bobby - age 5

"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." --Tommy - age 6

"My Mommy loves me more than anybody. You don't see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night." --Clare - Age 5

"You really shouldn't say 'I love you' unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget," --Jessica - age 8

...Thanks for reminding us Jessica!

When you keep your eyes open for mirth, you just may find it! Hope this kicks off your morning and helps get your mood adjusted for the week. Now, get busy MAKING CHANGE WORK and have some fun along the way!...
