Crawl, Walk, Run!

05/05/03

"The answer to being successful in any business is simple; it's crawl, walk, run. Free enterprise is built on that. You make it work by focusing on what still makes money. Don't change customer behavior, capture it by serving it. Do what will help customers do what they want to do, and you will be successful. If you're living in a desert and dying because of lack of food, move to where the food is." Jeffrey Hayzlett, venture capitalist and current chairman of SMEI

Don't just design a walkway; find out where the people are walking, and pave it in a way that lets them get to where they already want to go! If you help them enjoy the journey or get them there faster, they just may pay you for your help. Yes, the economy remains soft in so many ways, but there is still business out there. There are still walkways to be paved. There are needs waiting to be served. Invest the time you invest in excuses into listening, observing, and acting in pursuit of business opportunities. While others are waiting for "things to change," the best are taking advantage of changes already in motion. Don't observe; participate by crawling, walking, and getting ready to run your way into your own recovery.

A PAULSON QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"The American Dream is still alive and well. The poor will always be with us, but most people do not remain poor. Optimism is not the result of Pollyanna thinking; it comes from building a track record of overcoming obstacles and bouncing back from setbacks to finally find your dream. Victors say to themselves, 'I'm going to figure out how to become successful one way or another.' Victims say, 'I'll never be able to succeed.' Every generation of America has to reearn the dream. Our challenge is to make sure that all have the chance to participate in that dream." --Terry Paulson, Ph.D.
