Values Define Your True North!
04/21/03
Marcy Fuller, the CEO for energy trading firm Mirant, was selected as one of the top women executives by Fortune magazine. Her comments are worth any leader remembering: "Obviously, it's a business about risk-taking. Whatever you do, hold on to your values."
As we race into an uncertain and rapidly changing future, the best change leaders have a clear picture of their non-negotiable values that will guide their choices. They will not sacrifice tomorrow's values for today's reportable earnings. They know that the trust and respect earned in the eyes of customers and employees alike are critical in driving a successful future for any organization. But it is hard to live up to a promise, when people are not clear what the promise is. Take a blank sheet of paper and list the values that are your non-negotiables. Ask your team what they think would be on your page. Take time as a team to use this experience to discuss your organization's core values. Let your people know that they will never get in trouble taking a stand for the values that count. In a world of uncertainty and change, we still need a good compas to navigate. Good luck in finding your true north!
A PAULSON QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Honor is a gift you give yourself, your people and your organization. Your values are both your anchor in rough seas and a lighthouse that helps illuminate a positive and principled course. They are what you stand for and what you hold yourself accountable to maintain no matter what the cost or the change. Can you articulate the values you honor by acting on them?" --Terry Paulson, Ph.D.
